1943 steel pennies up for sale. I haven’t cleaned them in order to save their rustic pátina. All of these pennies were produced during World War II. This is the only year that pennies were produced in a material other than copper. In 1943, in an attempt to ration copper for World War II, the United States government halted production of copper pennies and began using steel with a zinc coating. This is also the only US currency to be produced that is magnetic
